Perlite: A special variant of acid eruptive rock, a kind of volcanic erupted acid lava, vitreous rock formed by rapid cooling, named because of its pearl fissure structure. Its characteristic is that the acidic volcanic glass matrix contains spherulites or a large number of pearl-like cracks. It can be made into light-weight insulation materials and expanded perlite products. Perlite mines include perlite, obsidian and turpentine.
